I'm not going to answer the question to my title with my own opinion. I want to hear from others.
I have thoughts about the possible answers.
-the love of writing
-keeping up to date with events
-the excitement of seeing one own's article published
Why else?

I think for all of the reasons you listed and maybe because we have this idea in our heads to be the "globe-trotting, investigative" journalists. All of us want to break the next Watergate, right?
To let the people hear the truth would be my reason for becoming a journalist.
