Awww, Hawaii

Was up?

So, have you ever been fishing in Hawaii. Have you ever been spear fishing? My husband has and I swear he's part merman or something like it.

He's lucky to have me kayak with him while he's snorkeling for a hunt. Once he makes a kill he has me paddle over and he puts the flopping carcass in a bag so blood doesn't seep around us, attracting jaws.

So, maybe you could try it someday...

I wake up in the morning to the sound of waves and roosters crowing. Every morning I take in the sights of turtles shimmying along the shoreline. They are a sight to see because they are gentle creatures of the ocean.

How young is too young? Is it the media's fault?

Here is a picture of my nephew, Phoenix. He is 4 years old. The other day, my sister said he watches the news. In fact, he asks, mom can we watch the news. Take notice of his carseat.

I started off young too, but not that young. This is a sensitive issue for me because I don't want to step on any parenting skills, it's my sister.

But most children of the states get to watch TV, and the news is interesting them. What is it that is interesting the children? What does a 4 year-old find appealing about the news?

If it's something bad then how is this affecting young children who are watching the news. Is it making them more paranoid and smarter?

No seatbelts, Oh my!

If this is a journalism blog, then I should be able to talk about what has been on the news lately.
I would like to start with something I just found out about.
Hannah Montana, I know your probably thinking, enough of her, kinda like Brittany Spears, but Montana A.K.A. Miley Cyrus has made headlines for not wearing a seat belt in a movie. Her dad wasn't either according to the Associated Press.
Well, these facts must be true. Some have made the point that this was the Cyrus' opportunity to influence young teen drivers and riders, but they didn't set a good example.

Even though this is the law, this was a movie. How many people don't wear their seatbelts in movies, probably a lot. But I understand this is not suppose to be the point. The point is suppose to be her enourmous popularity and using it for a better cause. Well, people make mistakes.
I think it's sad that the media has to sink low to make a story. There is always two sides to a story. It's funny because you go back to probably where they are from, and I bet not everybody wears their seatbelt, it's a culture and generation thing. We learn a lot from our parents.

I can say this because I am from the country as well. I see it all the time. It's interesting how the media can shed light on the issue of wearing a seatbelt at the expense of a new and young public figure.

Journalism transformation

How come when I first started college, journalism was about interviewing, reporting, and writing the story, but now I find out from my own teachers that journalism is not what it use to be? How come I didn't find this out 4 years ago? I have read class readings dating back before I started college that the state of journalism is changing and journalists are going to have to pick up the slack. I just think this information should have been told to college freshmen a long time ago. I sure hope the teachers are telling this to college freshman and seniors in highschool.
I always thought it would be cool to take my own pictures and write the stories, but now that's a requirement with a lot of other things. I'm just amazed how fast a field can fall flat on it's face or just reinvent itself.
I just hope that students in high school are learning everthing there is to know about the field because it was nothing like I thought it was when I was a college freshman. Now, it's even more different.
If you have had a similar awakeing let me know.

Why does a journalist want to be a journalist?

I'm not going to answer the question to my title with my own opinion. I want to hear from others.

I have thoughts about the possible answers.

-the love of writing
-keeping up to date with events
-the excitement of seeing one own's article published

Why else?
